Ad(d)s for a reason..

Sehwag...(for that matter) a Cricketer needed to promote Hockey???
To me it looks more like an appeal to people..."Please come and watch this (not -so-hot) National sport".
Hero Honda...no doubt is doing its bit to keep the sport in limelight.
But with IPLs and 20-20's becoming the dish of the day....some chef ( Govt.) has to really churn a good hot combo for Hockey too. Why isn't that even being thought of?

Honda may get its sales up by few more lacs...Viru's got some crores or lacs for this ad....what more??Its all about money baby!!.....( Remember the Idea cellular ad for the cause of 26/11?) Marketing in the name of social/national cause...or mere awareness.
Can't help being cynical....unable to differentiate the genuineness of intentions behind some of these ads!!

in that case, Idea's recent ad to save paper and use mobile phones is a mere joke.... the truth being excess mobile usage/cell phone towers causing reduction in number of birds and bees, and ecological imbalance being created.

We had a guest lecture today for 6 hours by the Director of DD Kendra, Delhi who has a hand in the Hero Honda's Hockey campaign (remembered your post at that time). We were shown two spots, one with Viru and other with Rajyavardhan Rathore. I raised a point that Viru's spot doesn't convey the message effectively as Rathore. He explained that Viru was forced to read out the script and not be himself - so this is a production stage issue. As regards to Hero Honda and why hockey? He told - it was a business deal with Hero Honda bikes shown, but the 'Dhak dhak go' brand comes only for 3-4 seconds in the end. Otherwise the ad is concerned with Hockey match dates, what is the cup about etc. Its not an ad - but a Public/ Social Broadcast spot (like for Plastic usage ban, AIDS etc. done in association with a commercial brand like Hero Honda).

@Aparna...

hmm..thats nice! Thanks for sharing across.
Sometimes such advtg does a sport more harm ....by using strong brands references.

The brand reference is used, because the country's youth identifies it with brands and icons. Creative and commercial marketing combine for Public Broadcast. If you check out Rathore's version of the ad - you will find a difference.

Its similar to what difference you would associate with watching Bharatbala's version of Jan Gan Man (Which was made for Public broadcast) or some 1980's Jan Gan Man version with some instrumental music (which sounds very dull).

On second thoughts, Idea cellular should tie up with Farmville for saving trees.
